EIUG Chairperson Year-End Message 2025

(December 8, 2025)

December 2025

Dear EIUG members,

As we close 2025, I want to extend heartfelt thanks for your commitment, insight, and unwavering support. Your contributions across committees, consultations, and engagements have strengthened our collective voice and advanced the interests of energy intensive users in South Africa.

This year we maintained momentum on critical issues: the power system’s marked improvement with minimal loadshedding; active collaboration on CBAM and carbon policy; a focused review of Grid Emission Factor methodology with industry and government partners, a substantive response on the Market Code Draft and other consultation papers, etc. Your participation made these advances possible.

We navigated important governance changes and welcomed new leadership capacity. Following the October General Meeting, Tarryn Garrun (South32) and PJ Grey (Glencore) were elected to Council, while we recognized the service of Dr. Muzi Dlamini and prepared for the retirement of Dr. Nic Dawson. Thank you to everyone who helped ensure smooth transitions and continuity of our work.

We deepened our evidence based advocacy. EIUG, with partners FAPA and MCSA, advanced tariff reform efforts and as EIUG we launched an Electricity Pricing Study to inform fair, sustainable pricing. Our cautious stance on Eskom’s Nuclear Attributes auction reflected thorough technical and legal review, prioritising transparency and market integrity.

Member led technical capacity continued to shine. The ITTCC supported climate risk management and reporting (including ISSB IFRS S2), shared updates on GEF and CBAM, and convened knowledge sessions to help members navigate a changing policy landscape. We also co hosted a successful EIUG Conference with Vuka Group, fostering practical dialogue on energy security, affordability, and sustainability.

Our stakeholder engagement remained constructive and solutions oriented. In our meeting with the Ministry of Electricity & Energy (Deputy Minister), we emphasized cost reflective tariffs, regulatory certainty, grid access, and pragmatic decarbonisation—linking industrial demand and investment pipelines to national priorities. Thank you to every member who prepared inputs, shared data, and represented EIUG with professionalism.

In 2026, we will continue to drive priorities that matter to you: CBAM readiness; hydrogen economy opportunities; grid stability and energy security (including BESS); industrial decarbonisation pathways; and market reform for competitive, cost reflective pricing. We will sustain transparent financial stewardship and broaden member participation in Finance Governance Procurement, Technical & Regulatory, and Communications & Stakeholders Committees.

Thank you for a year of collaboration and impact. I wish you a joyful, restful break with family and friends, and the energy and clarity to meet the new year’s challenges together. We look forward to building on our progress—stronger, more united, and focused on a sustainable, secure, and affordable energy future for South Africa.

Warm regards
Mr Murendeni Matshinyatsimbi

About the EIUG

The EIUG was established in 1999, and is a voluntary, non-profit association of energy intensive consumers whose members currently account for over 40% of the electrical energy consumed in South Africa. As electricity is a key input to the processes of these organisations, it is the ‘life blood’ of our businesses. Our members collectively contribute over 20% to the GDP of South Africa and employ over 650 000 people across multiple sectors, including mining, quarrying, manufacturing, electricity, transportation, and water. The EIUG is dedicated to the promotion of the interests of energy users in South African Industry.

The EIUG is a member-led organisation working for the good of the country. The group strongly believes that energy is the engine for economic growth and development in South Africa. We are therefore committed to working with government, power utilities and other stakeholders to ensure South Africa has energy industries which provide reliable supply at acceptable quality and competitive prices.
